A Science Teacher Replies to
Jonathan Sarfati

I have just waded through the rambling tome submitted by Jonathan Sarfati, an exercise both amusing and irritating. Amusing, because it conjures mental images of this poor man combatting all those "atheistic" Skeptics in a biblical dreamscape. No doubt he battles windmills as well! For the amusement you've provided, Jonathan, my thanks. However, I did mention, didn't I, that your voluminous tale provided some slight irritation, a situation which pertains to your strange and illogical concept of ethics. To quote: "I'm not saying that all atheists lie, or all Christians always tell the truth, but that atheists certainly have no moral basis for refraining from scurrilous lies." Jonathan, there are many myths which form part of religious doctrine and belief, and the linking of ethics with religion, and Christianity in particular (your intimation), has no logical basis. What would be your substantiating data for such an assumption? The initial section of your statement only indicates that all members of Homo sapiens have the ability, and often the will, to lie. Agreed, but your contention that atheists have no objective moral basis to refrain from lies cannot be sustained in reality. It is a myth which, like any other that endures today, is irrational, illogical, and denies the ethical code that I, and other atheists of my acquaintance apply in the way we live and interact with others. These abstract principles guide our lives towards fulfilment and happiness, without a sense of guilt, and most assuredly without fear of being cast into a mythical "hell". We live by an ethical code which makes us no more, and no less, likely to lie than other members of our species, except of course for creationists, who seem to just about have the lying market cornered! After moving from your "article" to read the fundamentally incorrect, fundamentally flawed concept of evolution expounded by John J. Schell on this Guestbook, actual biological scientists (not pretend ones) would certainly be able to substantiate my claim that creationists are unique to our species, being better at printing lies than most of us.
